True Diary Disscution post #2

Juniors perception of his tribe changed dramaticly from the time he quit going to Wellpoint and started going to Reardon because he was subject to different people in his life than just the people on the rez. When he lived on the rez he only knew one type of person, a poor, ignorant indian. That is all he was around from his dad being drunk and his sister living in the basement he never knew anything else. The only good thing he had in his life was Rowdy, who he temporaraly lost as a friend for trying to better himself. Whe Junior started going to Reardon he realized that he may be different but everyone is different. He made friends with people who he never thought would even talk to him. I think when Gordy and Penelope entered his life he suddenly realized that he could have different people as friends. It opened a whole new world for Junior, a world where everyone has problems, and goals and dreams. He grew up very fast when he lost eveyone he loved in such a short time that it also made him realize how life is so short that you need to go for your dreams. He realized that all human beings are in the same tribe they just take different paths, and some take the same path that he chose.

True Diary

I havent read a book like this since I was in Highschool. It really made me think of the differences that we as a society take for granted. Here is an indian boy with dissabilities who is drug down by what society thinks of how he should be living. Poor and even more poor. With no hopes at all for the future. He has the gumption to rise up out of his poverty sticken reservation he lives on to get a better education and life. He sacrifices his friendship with his best friend to go to a differen school. A school of hope as the author describes. A school full of white people, because white means hope to him and he needs alot of it. He goes to this white school with alot of bravery and wisdom. He learns how to live on the reservation with his differences and he goes to a middle class school and learns how to live with his differences there too. I have learned alot form Junior.
